What is OneMap?
One of our main goals since establishing SHINE has been the development of a shared GIS (Geographic Information System) map, which we’ve called OneMap. A GIS map is a digital map used to visualise and analyse data related to geography and locations. OneMap came about during a design sprint hosted by SHINE at Northumbrian Water Innovation Festival 2024. The map brings together asset-based information for several SHINE members.
We believe is the first of its kind at this scale within our sector and can revolutionise the way we manage homes across partners of SHINE. It enables us to gain a comprehensive view of housing stock across our shared geography, significantly enhancing our knowledge of our homes and leading to better decision making. This in turn will optimise our resources and ultimately have a positive impact for customers.
Today, the platform contains information on more than 188,000 properties from 10 housing providers, covering 19 local authority areas across the North East, North Yorkshire and the Humber regions.
Teams are using the platform to identify opportunities for joint working, better understand local challenges and target investment where it can have the greatest impact.

Christine Paxton, Karbon Homes
“OneMap has been a game‑changer for us. For the first time, we can see a shared, accurate picture of housing stock across the North East, all in one place. The collaboration through SHINE has created something genuinely innovative — it’s already transforming how we make decisions, plan resources, and understand our homes."
