Tackling child poverty in our homes

SHINE is working hand‑in‑hand with another partnership to make a real difference to those living in our homes.

The North East Housing Partnership (NEHP), a group of 17 housing providers across the North East Combined Authority (NECA) area, collectively provides over 200,000 homes across the region.

As a partnership, one of its focus areas is tackling child poverty because we know that where and how a child lives can shape their whole future.

Current Work Across the Partnership

  • Helping families with essentials

  • Running holiday clubs

  • Supporting parents into work

But the partnership wants to go further. So, they have made four clear pledges:

Four Pledges

  • A bed for every child – No child should have to sleep on the floor.

  • School uniforms for all – Supporting families so every child can go to school feeling confident and ready to learn.

  • Providing more sports and activities for young people.

  • Career inspiration – The partnership will be working with local schools to continue to support the career aspirations of.

Building on Existing Work

These pledges build on what housing providers already do within our local communities — including providing safe, affordable homes.

The NEHP has written to the Mayor of NECA to share these pledges, which have been included in NECA’s Child Poverty Action Plan.

Next Steps

The NEHP is working with SHINE to turn these pledges into a reality, first of all by using ONE Map to identify areas of high deprivation and child poverty where providers have a concentration of social housing stock.

The next step will be to identify local schools in those areas that the NEHP can partner with to pilot interventions.
