OneMap is ready to SHINE

Launched at SHINE’s June meeting, OneMap is an innovative mapping tool set to transform how social housing providers work together across the North East.

Built on ESRI’s ArcGIS platform, it blends open-source data, publicly licensed dataset and detailed asset information from partners like believe housing, Bernicia, Darlington Borough Council, Gentoo, Karbon Homes, North Star and Thirteen Group.

OneMap shows where homes are located, along with key insights including build year, EPC rating, deprivation levels, flood risk, anti social behaviour and climate vulnerabilities.

The map has huge potential to assist social housing providers in our region to make informed, strategic decisions. So far, the map has been used to collectively plan resource allocations for upgrade works on our  members’ homes, including shared procurement for investment programmes that include social housing decarbonisation fund. This makes sense for our communities where a single estate might have several different landlords.

OneMap has also already helped identify pilot areas for employability services targeting economically inactive women aged 50–65. Using layers on employment, income and health, partners pinpointed priority zones in Bedlington, South West Durham and Pallion.

SHINE’s child poverty group is also using OneMap to support the North East Combined Authority’s action plan. Read more about this in our newsletter

Lynsey Darby from believe housing, demonstrates the potential of OneMap.

OneMap was created at the Northumbria Water Innovation Festival in 2024 and brought to life by the GIS Club. It’s being led by believe housing’s Lynsey Darby, who won Innovator of the Year 2025 at the Housing Digital Innovation Awards.

Lynsey says: “OneMap breaks down barriers by showing where we all operate, helping us collaborate better and deliver stronger outcomes for our communities.

This is only the beginning. SHINE members are excited to keep building on the potential of shared data.”
